Tip #43 - Don't overvalue suited cards
Many players give too much weight to suited cards when making decisions. While having suited cards does add value to your hand, the actual increase in equity is smaller than most players think. Understanding the true value of suited cards is crucial for making correct decisions.
Facts about suited cards:
- Only about 6% more likely to win than unsuited cards
- Make a flush only about 6% of the time by the river
- Need to see all five cards to make a flush
- Often need to pay multiple bets to see all cards
- Dominated suited hands can be very costly
Common mistakes with suited cards:
- Playing weak suited hands from early position
- Calling raises with suited garbage
- Overplaying flush draws
- Ignoring position because of suits
- Playing dominated suited cards (like K2s vs AKs)
Guidelines for playing suited cards:
- Consider position first, suits second
- Value high cards more than suits
- Be aware of implied odds needed
- Watch for reverse implied odds
- Factor in opponent tendencies
As David Sklansky wrote, "The value of suited cards is often overestimated. While they do increase your chance of winning, the difference is not as great as many players think." Remember that being suited is just one factor among many when deciding whether to play a hand. Position, stack sizes, and opponent tendencies are usually more important considerations.
