Tip #41 - Don't play without a proper bankroll
A proper bankroll is your insurance against variance in poker. Playing without adequate funds is a recipe for disaster, as even skilled players can experience significant downswings. Your bankroll should be large enough to withstand the natural ups and downs of the game.
Signs of inadequate bankroll:
- Feeling stressed about normal game swings
- Unable to withstand typical downswings
- Playing with money needed for expenses
- Having to frequently reload or rebuy
- Moving down stakes after minor losses
Recommended bankroll requirements:
- Cash Games: 20-30 buy-ins for your stake level
- Sit & Go's: 50-100 buy-ins
- Multi-table Tournaments: 100+ buy-ins
- Higher for professional players
- Additional buffer for living expenses if playing professionally
Problems with insufficient bankroll:
- Increased likelihood of going broke
- Playing with scared money
- Inability to make optimal decisions
- Stress affecting game quality
- Missing profitable opportunities due to fear
As Daniel Negreanu once said, "The number one reason why most poker players go broke isn't because they're not good enough to win - it's because they don't have enough money to survive the swings." Having a proper bankroll isn't just about having money to play - it's about having enough to play your best game without fear of going broke.
