Tip #29 - Don't play too passively from late position
Late position is one of your biggest advantages in poker, but many players fail to capitalize on it by playing too passively. When you're in late position (cutoff or button), you should be looking to take control of the pot and put pressure on your opponents. Passive play from these positions gives up too much of your positional advantage.
Advantages of late position:
- You get to see how your opponents act before you decide
- You can steal blinds more effectively
- You can control pot size on later streets
- You can bluff more successfully
- You can play more hands profitably
Common mistakes in late position:
- Just calling when you should be raising
- Not taking advantage of steal opportunities
- Letting players see cheap flops
- Not re-raising aggressive players enough
- Playing fit-or-fold after the flop
How to play aggressively from late position:
- Raise with a wider range of hands
- Three-bet light against regular openers
- Continuation bet more frequently
- Use position to bluff effectively
- Take control of pots against weak players
Remember that position is one of the most powerful weapons in poker. When you have position, you should be looking to maximize this advantage through aggressive play. Don't fall into the trap of playing passively just because your hand isn't premium - position alone can make many hands profitable if played aggressively.
